The Final Week

At about 12:30pm today I finished my last class at Southern Utah University.  I will be in Cedar City to finish up my capstone and directing project, and then I will leave to start my new life as an actor!

Directing

I'm directing a show for my Directing I class called Yesterday's Window by Chiori Miyagawa.  I am inviting you to come see our first complete run-through on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2:30pm in AU 108 at Southern Utah University.  There are a limited number of seats, so it's first come, first served.  There will be a talkback after the show so that you can give your input.  See you there!

BUSY!!!

I've been so busy that I've been neglecting this blog.  Here is an update:

I sat in on both Streetcar and Fiddler auditions.

I cast Yesterday's Window and OH MY GOD we have some incredible freshmen.

I performed in our annual haunted attraction, ShakesFEAR.

I'm writing a short play about Ariana Dumbledore, which I hope to have performed at SUULive!

I have to get ready to end this chapter of my life.  I know I'm graduating but I don't really believe it.

Update

As I have been extremely busy over the past couple weeks, I haven't been able to update you as often as I would like.

Here is what has happened since I last updated you:

I opened A Midsummer Night's Dream to a good sized house.  For an article about the show, click here.

I auditioned for both USF's 2015 company and Second Studio's production of Henry V.

I closed Midsummer to a sold out house and huge acclaim.

I worked as a timer for the USF/SUU High School Shakespeare Competition.

My attention has now turned to setting up a gallery in Cedar City.  I will update you with more information as it becomes available.

Major change

There has been a major change to the A Midsummer Night's Dream schedule.  The poster is now inaccurate!  The performance on the eleventh has been scrubbed due to the High School Shakespeare Competition awards ceremony.  Because of this, we have added a performance on Monday the sixth.  Sorry for any inconvenience.

P.S.  I am performing in President Wyatt's inauguration into the SUU presidency tomorrow!

Fussin'

Rehearsals started today.  I wasn't there, so I have no idea if the people who didn't return my texts or emails got there.  I will be there tomorrow, though.  Now to look up AEA rules for breaks...  Five minute break for every hour?

Forgot

Forgot to say that I am the stage manager for Cache Theatre Company.  So that's cool.

Convergys and LYS

Although Convergys is not hiring seasonal employees at this time (they had to call me to tell me that, for some reason), I have volunteered to... er... volunteer with LYS for this summer.  Although it is not paid and is not acting or directing, it's theatre; so I count it as a win.  Also, Wal-Mart doesn't like me.  I'm not subservient enough.  I like to know why I'm doing things.

Job situation

I have not been able to find any artistic jobs as of yet.  I have given in and submitted an application to Convergys.  At least it pays well.

Star Wars

Because of all the negativity and "I hope they don't screw up this movie" stuff, I want to say that I am fully behind the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.  The only advice that I would give is to lay the past to rest.  Don't focus on being the old Luke or Leia.  Become the character as they are today and we will thank you.  To the newcomers: don't focus on what Star Wars is "supposed to be".  Find your own variation of the story and we will thank you.  Break legs to you all!

Update

I have now completed my end of year projects.  I have a final for improv and then I am headed back up to Logan.  During my time there, I have homework for Midsummer.  I am being given a full three weeks to come up with a specific character background for Egeus.  My off book date is the first day of fall semester.  I am incredibly honored to be in my second and last mainstage show at SUU and I know this show will catapult me to future professional Shakespeare roles.

End of Year Projects

There are two projects that I am currently working on.  Project 1 is my third directing project.  I recorded a scary story with sound effects that will be playing while I do shadow play behind a screen.  Project two is a piece for Movement II in which I play a Grandmother.  I have one paper and two quizzes left.  I also have a readthrough for A Midsummer Night's Dream on Thursday in which I play Eugeus.

Closing

Two incredible shows, The Fantastics and An Ideal Husband, close today; Fantastics at 2 and Ideal at 7:30.  The Fantastics is an incredible show and has sold out the previous two shows.  An Ideal Husband is also incredible (even more, in my opinion) and sold out the previous show.  I am also working Ideal, so there's that.  Be sure to come to both shows early as they will sell out quickly!  Visit the SUU website for ticketing information.  As always, SUU students get in free with their ID!

Film

I directed a short film for my directing class.  Take a look:

SUU auditions

This week has been awesome!  Two auditions nailed and two callbacks!  One for A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by Nathan Smith, and one for The Moon over Lughnasa, directed by Melinda Vaughn.  It would be my second time playing in Midsummer.  I first played Lysander in Cache Valley Learning Center's production in 2005.  It would be my first time playing in Lughnasa.  I enjoyed what I read of the show last week and it would give tribute to my Irish heritage.  Plus accent work is enjoyable.  Call backs are tomorrow at 4pm.  Wish me luck!

Disney Theatrical

I applied for an internship with Disney Theatrical this afternoon!  Wish me luck!

Moments

Today marks the first rehearsal for a one-act I am directing.  It is called "Moments" and is written by Bruce Kane.  The SM is Emily Smith and the actors are Robby Wilson as Jim, Jordyn Cardwell as Carly, Henry Ballesteros as the man, and Trisha Messick as the woman.  My goal in doing this project is to get Henry and Trisha noticed by the Peter Sham as well as bolster Robby's and Jordyn's reputations as incredible actors.  I also need to get my name back up on the board.  I only have one chance to do it this semester, so I need to be perfect.  Bring on the bloodbath!

USF

This week I applied for two positions for USF's Summer and Fall seasons and talked to Michael Bahr about Playmakers.  He's going to send me a schedule of things to help out with soon.  I'm also sending a video audition to Luanne Baker at the OLRC as I am not going to be able to make it to auditions this weekend.  If anyone has more suggestions of where to apply and/or audition it would be awesome!

Bat Boy AME

As an AME the grunt of my job is now over.  Today and Thursday are the programming/notes sessions, meaning making a single button cue up the correct channels when it is pushed.  We will be focusing the booms when we have actors to work with in order to make sure the actors know where the booms and their sidelights are and then we will go into tech.  I will need to be available to answer questions or direct them up to someone who can during tech and dress, but other than that I'm finished.

AME

Officially the AME for Batboy!  While this does conflict with ACTF and I will not be able to go, I believe that the AME experience will outweigh the experience that I would get at ACTF.  Plus I get to watch a show for free.  Who doesn't love that?  I'm also not going to forget to plug the lights in or unplug the lights during the show.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!  2013 was a great year for me.  Each and every low point was juxtaposed with a high point.  I got two scholarships, finished my Gen Eds, worked six shows professionally and performed in three, performed in both "ShakesFEAR" at SUU and "The Nutcracker" with CVCB, and made countless new friends along the way.  You were great 2013.  Let's make 2014 even bigger and better!
